Health can be defined as the wellness and normal functioning of a man’s body. When we are healthy, we can notice it with our fit physical appearance. But having a healthy body does not only mean a fit physical appearance, we can be considered healthy if our internal organs are free from disease and are functioning properly.

Just like a machine that gets less efficient as years go by, the human body also wears out. As we grow older, our body’s ability to repair itself becomes less effective. And because of this, we become prone to diseases and infection. The only sad thing about this is that the cost of keeping yourself free from disease is very high.

The people from Australia should be very thankful with their government because of the Medicare. Medicare is a publicly funded organization in Australia operated by the government. Medicare is responsible for providing a discounted and affordable treatment from accredited doctors. Instead of paying for the high cost of professional fees that is common among doctors, an Australian citizen can substantially cut treatment fees. The difference between a doctor’s professional fees and the discounted treatment cost is subsidized by the Australian government. Because of this, the government collects Medicare levy from its people.

A levy can be defined as an act of a government to collect and process tax from its residents. From this we can define, Medicare levy as tax collected from Australian citizens to fund the programs of Medicare. The levy is collected from income earners of all people who live in Australia. But compared to other people, high income earners are well-off and can even afford to buy luxury items. The government of Australia requires a higher medicare levy from this people and therefore collects surcharge from them.

A medicare levy is deducted from an income earner’s salary. Although this could reduce an individual’s purchasing power, the levy is for the betterment of all people. With only a portion of your salary set aside for the levy, you are able to help people who have health problems. With the medicare levy, people who are less fortunate can afford treatment costs.

Besides the medicare levy, people can also avail of health insurance that can be bought from private companies. Most of the time, only rich people can afford this. Besides professional fees paid for a doctor’s service, health insurance given by private companies can also subsidize a person’s entire hospitalization costs from  confinement to medicines. People who have a health insurance from private companies can also afford the high cost of private hospital fees.

Sometimes, medicare also covers fees on public hospitals.  Treatment costs, medicines and other supplies relating to curing a disease in public hospitals is relatively cheaper compared to private hospitals. The reason for this cheaper cost is because the operation of a public hospital is also funded by the government.

Health should be a top priority for people. We need to stay strong because our family depends on us. We need to be cured from whatever disease or sickness that we might have.
